In China we have established a research project on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, a globally important region for Saker Falcons. This research project includes studies of diet, habitat use, survival and movements. Many Saker Falcons are electrocuted on medium-voltage power lines in China; our research will therefore develop a programme to retrospectively insulate power lines in order to reduce rates of electrocution. The project will also assess the potential for using of birds of prey as a form of biological control of agricultural pest species on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is hoped this system will replace government-sponsored poisoning of small mammals in the region.
