International Wildlife Consultants (IWC; United Kingdom) and the Wildlife Science and Conservation Center (WSCC; Mongolia) have vacancies for a Project Manager and a Project Assistant for the Mongolian Saker Falcon Conservation and Management project, based at WSCC offices in Ulaanbaatar.
The Project Manager will drive forward the development and implementation of this diverse and ambitious project under the guidance and direction of the Head of Project (IWC). Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- To arrange and conduct meetings to discuss project issues with various agencies including government officials, company executives, aimag & soum representatives, academic researchers and school teachers.
- To promote and establish a procedure for monitoring the harvest of Saker Falcons by the Mongolian Government through discussion and lobbying of various agencies involved in this international trade process.
- To formalize agreements and increase awareness of the Artificial Nest Project across aimags and soums where the project is being implemented.
- To co-ordinate and facilitate the implementation of School Links programme with teachers and other senior staff at schools in soums covered by the Artificial Nest Project.
- To assist in the co-ordination of an experimental study to address the issue of electrocution of birds of prey on electricity power lines with engineers and senior staff of power distribution companies, regional/national government officials and academic researchers.
- To conduct frequent correspondence via email to liaise with the Head of Project in order to co-ordinate and implement activities in Mongolia.
- To undertake other duties as required.
- Qualifications:
- University degree.
- A post-graduate qualification (e.g., MSc, PhD) and/or at least 3 (three) years of experience in project management and planning.
- Professional experience in directly working with officials at various levels, particularly government officials and company executives.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with fluency in both Mongolian and English
- Enthusiastic with initiative to co-ordinate to drive forward and develop a multi-faceted conservation management programme.
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple, conflicting deadlines with attention to details. Full driving licence required.
Salary: Within range GB£788-GB£1,185 gross per month (ca. US$1000-1500 net per month)
The Project Assistant will provide all necessary operational support for the effective implementation of project activities under the guidance and supervision of the Project Manager (Mongolia) and Head of Project (UK). Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- To contribute to planning of and arrangements for meetings with various agencies including government officials, company executives, aimag & soum representatives, academic researchers and school teachers.
- To co-ordinate and implement fieldwork and field visits for the Artificial Nest Project across five aimags and 20 soums where the project is being implemented.
- To develop the required skills to undertake analysis of data and samples generated by fieldwork (e.g., the analysis of pellets and prey remains)
- To collate biological data from fieldwork and transfer this information to the Head of Project.
- To deliver presentations and undertake visits to schools within the School Links Programme at schools in soums covered by the Artificial Nest Project.
- To assist in the implementation of an experimental study to address the issue of electrocution of birds of prey on electricity power lines in Mongolia.
- To act as a mentor and advisor to Mongolian MSc students undertaking projects within the framework of the Mongolian Saker Falcon Conservation and Management project.
- To design and produce materials (including drafting press releases), to support and promote the activities of the Mongolian Saker Falcon Conservation and Management project under the direction of the Project Manager and Head of Project.
- To undertake other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- University degree in biology/ecology.
- A post-graduate qualification (e.g., MSc) and prior experience in biological project work, preferably with birds.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with fluency in English.
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize workload and manage multiple, conflicting deadlines with attention to details. Full driving licence required.
Salary: GB£550 gross per month (ca. US$700 net per month). For non-nationals we can also arrange return flights and accommodation.
Both post are initially for 9 months, with possibility of extension until November 2015 with a proposed start date 1st April 2012.
